The outbreak of the COVID-19 virus has dramatically disrupted the global community in more ways than one. From financial services and hospitality industries shutting down to educational courses migrating to online platforms, the impact of the pandemic has been swift and profound. But while this “new normal,” marked by public health vigilance and social distancing, demands a greater focus on daily operations, one facet of the virus that has often been overlooked is how it has negatively shifted intercultural communication on a national scale.
Since reports about the virus originating in Wuhan, China first surfaced last December, coronavirus-related hate crimes against Asian-Americans have spiked dramatically nationwide. According to research conducted by the Stop Asian-American Pacific Islanders (AAPI) Hate reporting center, there have been 1,100 incidents of COVID-19 hate crimes against Asian-Americans in the last two weeks of March 2020 alone. Although the concerns over the coronavirus are understandable, the stereotypes and exclusion are not. Given the increased necessity to cooperate with the global community and rise of COVID-19 related hate crimes against Asian-Americans, the need to highlight the racial misconceptions regarding the virus and tolerance among cultures is more important than ever. |
